The Portuguese Republic can be found on the Iberian Peninsula in Southwestern Europe.  Portugal shares a border with Spain only, and Portugal also controls several archipelagos in the Atlantic, known as the Azores and Madeira Islands.

Portugal has more mobile phones than landlines and this has been so for several years.  Portugal Telecom, Vidafone, and Optimus have the bulk of the market and UMTS phones are typical.  Although there are many mobile phones, there is a very low internet penetration rate due to low computer ownership in households.

Although Premium Rate Numbers are included in the numbering plan and easily available, all tariffs are Opt -In. The only exception is the tariff on the right side, which mostly is used for voting, TV Call-In shows or mass response game service numbers.  Premium Rates in Portugal have net amounts required in the price announcement and this announcement may only last 15 seconds.  Our value-added services in Portugal include local IVR services with a low setup cost.

Strangely, while having such a high mobile phone rate, Portugal has one of the lowest Internet penetration rates in the EU. More than 8% (4th quarter, 2004) of the population use high-speed internet services, almost twice as much as the previous year. 41% of households in Portugal had a computer in the first quarter of 2004, only 26% of the population had Internet; an additional 4% also used it. 78% of companies with more than 10 employees had Internet access.
